Thousands of people across the UK were charged twice for debit card payments following a glitch. Customers paid twice due to a problem with card terminals run by Cardnet, despite transactions only showing up once on receipts. The error affected around 5% of payments made on machines on 29 August. Cardnet is a payment system run by Lloyds Bank and card processor First Data, which handles 1.1 billion transactions a year, including for a wide range of shops, restaurants and businesses in Britain. This means that Lloyds customers were not the only ones affected, since the machines accept most Mastercard (Swiss: MA.SW - news) and Visa (Xetra: A0NC7B - news) payments. Customers will have to check their bank statements for duplicate payments - but they should have been automatically reimbursed. If you can please check your bank account and if you have been charged twice, please come in with proof (bank statement) and you will be reimbursed. We apologise for any inconveniences this may have caused. The Dental Centre

We would like to introduce our new dentists to the team here at The Dental Centre. David and Rhiannon After qualifying from the University of Glasgow in 1994, David completed his vocational dental year in Aberdeen before working for many years in Glasgow and London before returning to his Ayrshire roots in 2011, to work locally in Prestwick and Troon. David has a particular interest in restorative and cosmetic dentistry as well as prosthodontics and periodontology. In the surgery he strives to provide high quality dentistry for all the family. Away from the dental surgery David enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf and travelling. Rhiannon has been living in Scotland for the past six years, and has really grown to love the country. She has worked in Glasgow, Falkirk, and Ayrshire. She enjoys all aspects of general dentistry, but especially likes to support anxious patients through treatment. When she's not working, Rhiannon loves to go hillwalking and is working on conquering the Munros- only 279 left to go!

We would like to introduce our newest member to the team. Our Hygienist Laura. Laura qualified from the University of the Highlands and Islands in 2013. She completed her VT in 2014 on the Isle of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides and then stayed for an extra year. Laura has worked in Dumfries and Galloway, Glasgow and Perthshire. Laura's dental strengths are hygiene work and paediatrics. Laura enjoys learning languages, music, walking her dog, photography and travelling. Regular appointments are not just about a scale and polish alongside a lecture about your cleaning - its more about working together as a team to ensure your mouth can be as healthy as possible. The hygienist can assess your oral health and point you in the right direction to improve your cleaning. The hygienist may show you areas you are not cleaning effectively or help you clean the areas you just can-t get too. We can all get a little complacent with our day to day oral cleaning routine - after all most of us have been brushing for years but unfortunately gum disease is also known as a silent disease. It can be happening in your mouth for some time without you seeing any signs. The hygienist can pick up the signs of gum disease early and you can work together to either reverse or stabilize the disease process. So lets start at the beginning. Gum disease is an umbrella term for gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum or gingival tissues and is usually reversible with no lasting damage. Gingivitis is caused by plaque bacteria and causes bleeding, red and swollen gums. If you see blood when you are brushing or flossing it is likely to be a sign of gingivitis and should not be ignored. The hygienist will probe around your mouth to determine if any areas bleed and can advise you on how to adjust your at-home cleaning routine accordingly. Some people will unfortunately go on to develop periodontitis. This is a more serious form of gum disease that affects the bone surrounding the teeth. This can lead to loose teeth and perhaps even tooth loss. We know certain groups of people may be more likely to develop periodontitis and they include smokers and patients with poorly controlled diabetes but there may also be a genetic link. We cannot reverse the damage caused by periodontitis but it can be stabilized. Patients with periodontitis may require more frequent hygiene appointments.
